Most notebook users would agree that notebooks high on performance tend to compromise on the battery life. With Nvidia’s latest technology, that should hopefully be a thing of the past. At least that’s what the company claims.Nvidia introduces the Nvidia Optimus technology that claims to even out notebook performance and battery life.
The revolutionary technology seems to take notebook PC performance to completely new levels. It should specifically cater to the needs of users who opt for notebooks with the advanced graphics processor for running a given application. The technology automatically routes the workload to either an NVIDIA discrete GPU or Intel integrated graphics. Thus it not only delivers great performance but also offers superior battery life.
“Consumers no longer have to choose whether they want great graphics performance or sustained battery life,” mentioned Rene Haas, general manager of notebook products at Nvidia. “Nvidia Optimus gives them both - great performance, great battery life and it simply works.”
The technology Nvidia claims functions just like a Hybrid car that makes a choice between the gas-powered and electric car engine on-the-fly. Similarly the Optimus technology chooses the most appropriate engine doing the same thing for graphics processors. It quickly directs the workload through the most efficient processor for the job. This allows it to efficiently extend the battery life by up to 2 times as against similarly configured systems armed with discrete GPUs.
The high-performance Nvidia discrete GPU is employed when users play 3D games, running videos, or using GPU compute applications. Interestingly, when users choose to run basic applications like web surfing or email, the technology allows the integrated graphics processor to be used. All these attributes enable users to enjoy a long lasting battery life without having to give up on graphics performance.
Starting with the Asus UL50Vf, N61Jv, N71Jv, N82Jv, and U30Jc notebooks, the Nvidia Optimus technology is expected to be available shortly.
