Hot Buzz : Dell update : Precision M6500 'beast' with USB 3.0 & Core i5

In addition to revealing its slim little Latitude 13 laptop, Dell also upgraded its Precision M6500 workstation — or what it calls “the beast” — with USB 3.0 and an Intel Core i5 option.

It’s only been three months since Dell first announced the 17-inch business-minded system, but the Dell folks told me that they wanted to incorporate new hardware as soon as possible into the 1.35-inch barnburning rig.

The business blazing comes courtesy of an Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, choice of ATI FirePro M7740 or NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800M graphics, support for up to three storage devices (encrypted, free-fall sensor, SSD, optional RAID) and a 1920 by 1200 LED-backlit display, along with the aforementioned USB 3.0 and Core i5 option.

Otherwise, we’re talking a smart card reader, optional fingerprint reader, TPM 1.2, Wave Embassy Trust Suite, 802.11a/g/n, optional dual-array microphones, optical drive (DVD-ROM, RW or Blu-ray) and an 8.5-lb. weight that will pull your arms right out of their sockets. (See the full specs here.)

The starting configuration will cost you $2,749, with a full-blown rig with edge-to-edge glass costing $4,219 — but you’ll be expensing this killer, right?
