A Sprint let out word that the company will unveil Android updates, although it was not confirmed whether this will be version 1.6 or 2.0. Apart from that, Android-powered handsets are also tipped to experience a price cut due to higher volume, whcih is always a good thing. Word has it that the company might also throw in another Android handset that boasts a built-in MiFi-style router to keep you connected virtually anywhere you are, as long as there is a decent signal. Lenovo Stunning New Machine Supporting Windows 7.
A pair of new additions have been announced for Lenovo’s ThinkPad line. So all of those business people who shunned Windows Vista and held onto XP can finally take the plunge to a new OS. These new notebooks are optimized to run Windows 7 along with a host of other little goodies.
Powered by Intel Core2 Duo processors, a 16:9 HD screen, HDMI and VGA outs are just some of the features. Lenovo also really hit the VoiP market hard with these. You’ve got WiFi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, and some models have 3G built in. The camera resolution is supposed to be better, but we didn’t get any specs for it, so who knows. The integrated microphone now has a dedicated mute button for when you need to cut the audio. These laptops are even EPEAT and Energy Star certified to be green. So you’ll know that you aren’t horribly destroying the planet when you buy one.
The SL series is the lowest of the ThinkPad’s but the new SL410 and SL510 are the only members to be certified under Lenovo’s Enhanced Experience program. I’m not really completely sure what that means. According to the press release, “certified PCs deliver a faster, richer and easier computing experience over identical configuration, non-optimized PCs.” So they have the same hardware, they just run better for some reason? Why not just optimize all of them?

BenQ's Featherweight Joybook Lite Powered By Atom.
BenQ has been off the hook for a while now, but they have finally collected themselves well in time for the CES, entering the laptop fray with their latest Joybook Lite U101. Weighing at about 1 kg, the U101 is aimed as a second notebook for the vivid user. It packs a 10.1” 16:9 WSVGA LED backlit screen supporting 1024 x 600 resolutions. This not so big notebook is powered by a 1.6GHz Atom processor for higher energy efficiency and extended battery life which is made possible with SSD-driven, three-cell battery. Logitech's New Eye Catcher HD QuickCAM PRO.
There was a time when having a webcam was only for the wealthy. Those days are long gone. Today almost every household in the U.S. is able to connect to the Internet. With the boom of the Internet came social networking, online dating, instant messaging, and even online business meetings. No longer do we have to worry about the low quality, blurry, spherical webcams provided in the past. The future is here, and webcam quality has risen so much in such a short time it’s astonishing, with Logitech leading the way. They released their Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 not too long ago, and we’re lucky enough to be able to give you a quick overview of it.
One of the first things you’ll notice about the camera is the Carl Zeiss lens located on the left side of its uniquely horizontal body. The microphone is located on the right, and you’ll also find a button beside the lens that allows you to take pictures. Around the Logitech logo is an indicatory illuminated circle that lets you know when the QuickCam Pro 9000 is on. It has a very unique, two-hinged support structure that bends in different shapes so that you have the versatility to either secure the webcam to a CRT or LCD monitor or stand it on a table.
Regardless of the features a webcam has, it must be able to transmit great image and sound for it to be a worthy solution. Everyone that we had a video chat with via instant messaging said the image transmitted was extremely sharp and of astonishingly high quality. Using the high resolution setting on the QuickCam, we were able to enjoy full screen video chat with contacts without image noise. One of the best features of the camera is HD recording, which allows you to record in HD, for those who love to make high quality videos and host them on your PC or online.
The QuickCam Pro can be purchased for about $113, which is affordable for the quality provided. You definitely won’t need another webcam for awhile if you purchase the new Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000.

Sony Reveals New 3d Protype stereoscopic.
Sony has developed a new 3D prototype device that lets you view objects and images in 360 degree view in 3D inside of a cylindrical device measuring 10.6" x 5.1", the best part is, images on it can be viewed without wearing any special 3D glasses and from all angles the view is the same. It supports 24-bit, 96 by 128-pixel stereoscopic color images as of now.
Sony is quoting various applications like digital signage, medical studies, virtual pets, digital photo frame, web shopping etc, It will be displayed at the Tokyo’s Digital Contents Expo tomorrow.
Lets hope that it gets into production, not just remains a prototype.
Harry Potter 6 Dvd and bonus features out this December.
Warner Home Video has revealed that it will be conjuring up one of the year's biggest box office hits on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on 7 December.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth of the boy wizard's big-screen adventures, will be arriving as a two-disc Special Edition DVD and a three-disc Blu-ray pack, the latter including a bonus DVD containing a Digital Copy of the film. Perhaps most exciting of all, though, is the confirmation that the hi-def release will also employ Warner's new-fangled Maximum Movie Mode, an interactive viewing experience already used to spectacular effect on the US Blu-ray release of Watchmen: Director's Cut.
Other extras shared across both the DVD and Blu-ray releases include Close-Up With The Cast of Harry Potter (29 minutes); J.K. Rowling: A Year In The Life documentary (50 minutes); One-Minute Drills (character info – seven minutes); What's On Your Mind (interviews – seven minutes); The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (a sneak peek at the Universal Orlando Resort theme park ride – 12 minutes); and eight additional scenes. Early indications lead us to believe that most (if not all) of the video extras are to be presented in hi-def on the Blu-ray release.

iPod Touch New Gadget By Apple.
Just like the new generation of iPod nano was announced earlier this morning, so do we have news of a new iPod touch as well, pushing the device into the third generation. One thing that would disappoint most people about this would be the lack of a built-in digital camera after being hyped up about it through various rumors and fan sites over the past weeks and months, but guess there is always the anticipation of seeing said integrated digital camera make an appearance sometime in the future with the fourth iteration of the iPod touch. What’s cooking with this generation of iPod touch? We’ll take a closer look at it right after the jump
According to Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, “At just $199 the iPod touch is the most affordable gateway to Apple’s revolutionary App Store with more than 75,000 applications that you can wirelessly download right into your iPod touch. Yes, that’s right – prices for the new iPod touch will start from $199 upwards for the 8GB model, where those who feel that they need more space can always fork out slightly more for the 32GB and 64GB models that will retail for $299 and $399, respectively. Too bad for those who just picked up an iPod touch yesterday, getting half the capacity at the same price – good things always come to those who wait, eh? In this case, it pays to be well informed ahead of time, especially with companies like Apple who announce upcoming events ahead of time so that you can stop your purchase before a particular date if it isn’t too much of a rush.
New Probook By HP For Windows7.
HP on Tuesday unveiled two new Windows 7 business laptops intended to shake out what’s left of the IT budget and convince businesses that Windows 7 migration doesn’t have to be (too) expensive.
The HP ProBook 6445b and ProBook 6545b are targeted at corporate customers “who want an affordable combination of business-critical and innovative features in a full-function notebook PC.” That translates to up to 8 hours and 15 minutes of battery life, as well as a wealth of wireless connectivity options.
But the coolest darn feature of these laptops is a spill-resistant keyboard with a drain underneath the laptop. I was able to witness this work in person, and it’s a frightening visual: a steady stream of water running right into the keyboard of an active ProBook and coming right out a drain hole in the bottom.
Scary — but very cool — stuff.
HP’s reps say the drain will save your PC but not your pants; I suppose the wager is that your pants didn’t cost as much as your ProBook did, and if they did, you wouldn’t care.
Other business-centric features include HP QuickLook, a light quick-boot option for e-mail, contacts, etc.; HP Power Assistant, which lets you monitor and choose power consumption levels on the fly; and optional business card reader software to pair with an optional webcam.

Dell's New Inspiron 15z.
Dell's ubiquitous Inspiron line of laptops is getting a few new additions today, with the announcement of the Inspiron 14z and 15z. According to Dell, the "Z" designation for these new systems indicates, "thinner, lighter bodies, and long-lasting power-sipping batteries."
They also both feature 16:9 1,366x768 widescreen displays, and Intel's Core 2 Solo processors -- which offer much of the battery saving advantages found in low-power chips such as Intel's Atom, but with better performance more suited for a mainstream system.
Specs, according to Dell, include:

Hp New Monster fueled by i7
HP's back with yet another laptop for everybody. The new Pavilion dv8 from the leading PC maker features a large 18.4" screen, capable of a full 1080p resolution. To take advantage of this capability is the Blu-ray drive.
The laptop also features the Core i7 processor, from 4GB to 8GB of RAM, dual 320GB HDDs, NVIDIA GeForce GT230 graphics, a TV tuner and a Long Life battery. The Long Life battery is HP's new, and green, battery that can sustain over 1,000 recharges and maintain "like-new" performance for three years, therefore having a long life in the larger picture, but probably not so much at a time.
Though the company hasn't set any official dates or pricing for potential North American customers, the beast is set to be released on October 22nd (oh would you look at that, the date that Windows 7 is coming out) for roughly $2000.
First wireless docking laptop by Dell.
Computer giant Dell has released a new laptop that can recharge wirelessly through power cords built into its base.
According to Dell, The Latitude™ Z is “the world’s thinnest, lightest 16-inch laptop” weighing in a 2.5 kilograms and less than an inch thick.
Targeted at impression makers, such as entrepreneurs, attorneys, creative professionals, salespeople and leading higher education faculty, the laptop contains a number of exciting new features including: wireless docking and inductive charging, multi-touch touchpad and silky-touch backlit keyboard, a high-definition (1600×900) WLED display and two megapixel allowing users to scan and save business cards to Microsoft Outlook contacts and copy documents, along with a auto-lock function and a lean design allowing for easy transportation.
According to Steve Lalla, vice president and general manager, business client product group, Dell, Inc, Dell is introducing “ground-breaking innovations that mark many industry firsts.”
“We are committed to our core business and expanding our product line to meet the needs of our customers when they are ready to refresh or add to their existing infrastructure,” he said.
New Devices Released By Apple.
It appears that the rumours were true: Apple's released some new devices, the refreshed iMac, MacBook (that's the plastic one), Mac mini, and the new "Magic Mouse".
First off, the Magic Mouse is a refreshed Mighty Mouse. Why the name change, you may ask? Apple lost the name to another company which had the name before them, hence the new name. The mouse also features multi-touch technology, similar to the iPhone and iPod touch, or the MacBook Pro's trackpad. As seen to the left, the bottom of the mouse looks similar to the back of the newest generation of the iPod shuffle, with the lense close to the top along with a power switch. The mouse connects wirelessly via Bluetooth up to 33 feet. The new mouse now appears much sleeker and is rid of the previous little trackball. It comes packaged with new iMac or can be purchased separately for $69.
And working up the size chain, we arrive at the new Mac mini. This one doesn't look very different from the previous one, as the changes are generally inside. This generation boosts the amount of RAM by two, offering either 2GB or 4GB, along with either a 2.26GHz or a 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (mobile) processor. It also comes with GeForce 9400M graphics, 802.11n, a 160GB, 320GB, or 500GB HDD, and is one of the last Macs to still offer a DVD drive. But, you can sacrifice some more money and the optical drive for two 500GB hard drives for 1TB of storage and Snow Leopard Server.
Next up, the redesigned MacBook. Following in the steps of the MacBook Pros, the MacBook now features a unibody enclosure (though it's still white plastic) along with an inaccessible battery, which lasts 7 hours. It also has a larger, glass multi-touch trackpad like the Pro models. Along with its rubber bottom and magnetic latch, the 13.3" glossy screen offers a crisp 1280 x 800 resolution.
Lastly, there's the new iMac. Coming in either a 21.5" or 27" flavour, the iMac comes packaged with the new wireless Magic Mouse and the Wireless Keyboard, cleaning up even more desk space. New speakers, and edge-to-edge glass comes alongside the new standard full HD resolution (21.5" has 1920 x 1080 and the 27" one has a 2560 x 1440 resolution). And of course, there's the 2.66GHz Intel Core i5 processor or 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 processor inside, plus the standard 4GB of DDR3 RAM. There's also a new SD card slot right under the DVD slot.

Is Number 7 Lucky For Microsoft?
THERE are more than one billion computers in the world.
In just three years these machines could have a new ruler, one that will appear in just eight days' time.
Windows 7 will launch next Thursday and is shaping up as the release the computer industry, PC users and Microsoft have been waiting for.
The antithesis of Vista's difficult birth, Windows 7's launch is coming on time, under budget, well reviewed and well supported by computer, accessory and software makers.
Although Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer predicts "there will be a surge of PCs but it will probably not be huge," research firm Gartner predicts Windows 7 will be the world's biggest operating system by 2012.
But will computer users be able to put aside memories of Vista's teething problems to invest in the new system? And what does Windows 7 offer that its predecessors and rivals do not? Connect took the new system for a test drive, and quizzed stakeholders.
Lucky Number 7
PREDICTIONS for Windows 7's initial popularity vary.
Gartner research analyst Eileen He foresees a quick transition for consumers, many of whom have been waiting for the new software to arrive before investing in a new PC.
But she says other savvy computer users and businesses, burned by the Vista experience, might "wait for several months to see if this new system is good in the market".
Despite some hold-outs, analyst Annette Jump says that by next year 66 per cent of all new PCs sold will feature the new operating system.
It is heartening news for Microsoft Australia managing director Tracey Fellows, though she is careful not to get carried away.
"We will see some pent-up demand and higher sales in our retailers compared to last year, for sure, and sales for people upgrading their existing machines," she says. "I would say that this launch will be bigger than last time (with Vista) but you try and temper your excitement and enthusiasm with the current economic reality which is a bit uncertain."
Fellows says Microsoft followed Vista's launch with "an enormous amount of research" into what computer users wanted from the next Windows instalment.
The result, she says, was an overwhelming call for compatibility with other programs and accessories.
"We really had to prepare our close partners, our hardware and software partners, and take them on the journey with us so everything was available to new users, not some drivers ready and some drivers not ready," she says.
As such, Fellows says, Windows 7 is designed both as a Vista upgrade and for those who plan to upgrade from Microsoft's 2001 release, Windows XP.
New features
MICROSOFT'S new operating system does not look unfamiliar, but it does look cleaner and slicker.
Windows consumer product marketing manager Karl Miklis says the reason for this is "thousands and thousands" of focus groups and other research to determine how people use their computers.
"One of the first things you'll notice with Windows 7 is that the taskbar at the bottom of the screen is now much larger," Miklis says.
"The research showed that people had between five and 15 windows open at any one point in time and with so many windows open it's hard to navigate and find what you're looking for. Most people can only really use three at once."
To solve this problem, Microsoft added Taskbar Previews or windows that appear when your mouse touches a program icon. The preview windows show snapshots of open files, such as documents or websites, and let you select the right one.
Another big change, Miklis says, is one designed to clear clutter from users' desktops.
"People like to store things on their desktops - files, images, folders - but it was never designed as a storage space. It was designed as a background. People were using it as an easy access point," he says.
Miklis says Microsoft added a feature called Jumplist, a list of recently opened files. Also added is the ability to Pin favourite files and folders to the Jumplist, so they are listed at its top.
Other Windows 7 additions are designed to more easily manipulate open programs. Selecting a program's menu bar and shaking it makes other windows disappear. Moving it to the side will see the program take up just half the screen, so you may do the same with another program for on-screen comparisons.
Microsoft has also added a feature called Libraries that groups one type of file, such as photos or songs, together from wherever they are saved on your computer.
Fellows says her favourite addition to Windows 7 is HomeGroup that lets you set up a password-protected, file-sharing network in your home, so you can share photos or documents with nearby computers without physically carrying files about.
New computers
WINDOWS 7 is not just compatible with existing computer accessories, but with new types of computers.
The new operating system is both netbook-friendly and made for use with touchscreen computers.
Fellows says the addition of multi-touch capabilities to Windows 7 will encourage computer-makers to add touchscreens to laptops, netbooks and desktop PCs.
"HP had their TouchSmart computer but we are seeing an explosion in touch on the phone and now we'll see it on the PC," she says.
In the recent report Will Windows 7 Do for PCs What the iPhone Did For Mobiles, Gartner analysts Amy Leong and Tracy Tsai predict the new operating system will jumpstart a new era in touchscreen PCs, with demand surpassing six million touch-sensitive computers next year; more than four times the current figure.
Additionally, Windows 7 can also be added to netbooks for the first time. Unlike Windows Vista, whose requirements were too onerous for the moderate processors and memory in these mini-laptops, Windows 7 can be used capably in these computers.
There is some concern, however, that it may come at a slightly higher cost, raising the price of these miniature machines.
- Windows 7 will cost $299 for Home Premium, $449 for Professional or $469 for Ultimate from October 22.
7 key things you should know before upgrading to windows 7.
Thursday is a big day for Windows users. Microsoft is finally making Windows 7 publicly available, and the number of pre-orders for the operating system on Amazon.com has already surpassed orders for Harry Potter in the U.K.
Not bad for an operating system that costs $120 and doesn’t even have any magic wands or dragons in it.
That’s a good indicator that a lot of people are upgrading, and we’re sure there will be even more that follow after consumers spread the word about the vast improvements in Windows 7 over its predecessors. Here’s a simple guideline of what you should know to ensure your upgrade process is smooth — from purchase to install.
1. You should get this upgrade
We’ve written about Window's 7 starting points as well as its weaker points. On balance, we’re confident saying this is the best Microsoft operating system yet. If you’re running any earlier version of Windows, you’ll almost certainly want to upgrade — and you should feel no hesitation about buying new computers preloaded with Windows 7.
2. But you’ll have to pay for it
Apple offers an upgrade to its latest operating system, Snow Leopard, for $30 — and you can even take advantage of it if you don’t have the previous version, Leopard. Not so with Microsoft: You’ll need to pay $120 for the upgrade — or even more, depending on which version you get. (Unless you’re a smart shopper and can find a discounted price. See tips 6 and 7 below for details on which version to buy and how to find discounts.) As with previous versions of Windows, Microsoft has created a bewildering array of variations.
3. Double-check compatibility with your hardware
Paranoid about losing access to some of your third-party accessories and software after upgrading? You should be, at least a little bit. Microsoft claims Windows 7 will work smoothly with most third-party gadgets and software, but to be on the safe side, you should check out the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. The tool automatically scans your system and provides a report of any potential issues, as well as steps to resolve them.
4. Scout for computers shipping with Windows 7
If you’ve been shopping for a new computer — but waiting for Windows 7 to come out first — there’s a Microsoft tool to help search for new computers that ship with Windows 7. It’s called PC Scout, and it searches for computers based on your preferences. As of this writing, the results don’t bring up Windows 7 systems (since Windows 7 isn’t officially released yet), but the website clarifies that all the computers listed in the database are eligible for a Windows 7 upgrade. That means if you purchase one of those computers today, all you have to pay is $10 for shipping, and you get the Windows 7 upgrade free. By the time Windows 7 ships, the PC Scout should be showing results for computers that include Windows 7.
Amazon customers shopping for Windows 7 computers: There’s a web page just for you. Amazon breaks down a list of netbooks, notebooks and desktops shipping with Windows 7, so definitely check those out.
5. Upgrading from XP? Back up your data, wipe and migrate
Windows XP users cannot do a straight upgrade; they’ll have to back up their files, format their hard drive and perform a clean install. After your fresh copy of Windows 7 is on your computer, Microsoft offers a tool called Easy Transfer to migrate your files.
(If you’re a Vista user, you’ll be able to upgrade without doing a clean install — though fresh installations are generally recommended for optimal performance anyway whenever you switch to a new operating system.)
6. Know what you want
Disregard the awful, intimidating Windows 7 upgrade chart when you’re picking a version to buy. Choosing the right version really isn’t as complicated as Microsoft has made it sound in the past. Consumers: The vast majority of you should go with Windows 7 Home Premium. Business users: Most of you will want to go with Windows 7 Professional. (There’s a Windows 7 Ultimate edition, but that’s aimed at a very niche audience of ultra geeks who want to do everything they could possibly imagine doing with their computers.) Again, if you want to be safe, use the Upgrade Advisor to check your hardware and software compatibility.
7. Look for limited-time discounts
If you’re buying Windows 7 while it’s brand new, you shouldn’t be paying the full price. Microsoft and its partners are holding a weeklong sale called “7 Days of Windows 7.” Companies offering Windows 7 discounts with Microsoft include Best Buy, Dell and Acer. You can sign up to hear about daily offers on Windows.com. Also, you can check discount-aggregation sites such as PriceGrabber.com or Froogle.com to find the cheapest Windows 7 deals.

Apple 30-inch Cinema Display: $1,800. Apple iMac, with 27-inch display: $1,700. If you’re having trouble with those numbers, it means that if you can give up just three diagonal inches (and remember, it’s not the size but what you do with it that counts) then you can save $100, and Apple will effectively throw in a free computer.
It’s true that the Cinema Display is slightly more cinematic, with a vertical pixel count of 1,600 versus the iMac’s 1,440, but both have the same horizontal resolution of 2,560 pixels, which means you don’t get to fit much more on the bigger monitor.
Add to this the iMac’s killer feature: The screen can be used as a display for another computer using an optional DisplayPort adapter (DisplayPort is a two-way interface). This means that, a few years down the line when you have convinced yourself your computer is too slow, you’ll still have a great TV.
And make no mistake. From the splash page featuring the Star Trek graphic above to the VESA-compatible mount to the heavy emphasis on contrast ratios and viewing angle show you that Apple wants you to toss your telly and put this in the living room instead. 5 Principles Of Effective Logo Design.
What makes a good logo? A good logo is distinctive, appropriate, practical, graphic, simple in form and conveys an intended message.
There are five principles that you should follow to ensure that this is so…
An effective logo is (in no particular order):
- Simple
- Memorable
- Timeless
- Versatile
- Appropriate
1. Simple
A simple logo design allows for easy recognition and allows the logo to be versatile & memorable. Good logos feature something unique without being overdrawn.
While in college in the mid-70’s an instructor introduced me to the K.I.S.S. Principle of design; which translates to: Keep It Simple, Stupid. It does convey a very important design consideration. Simple logos are often easily recognized, incredibly memorable and the most effective in conveying the requirements of the client. A refined and distilled identity will also catch the attention of a viewer zipping by signage at 70 miles per hour, on packaging on the crowded shelves of a store, or in any other vehicle used for advertising, marketing and promotion. Remember, the basis of the hugely effective international branding for the world’s largest shoe manufacturer is a very simple graphic swoosh.
2. Memorable
Following closely behind the principle of simplicity, is that of memorability. An effective logo design should be memorable and this is achieved by having a simple, yet, appropriate logo.
You may be interested to see some examples of bad logo designs.
Surprising to many, the subject matter of a logo is of relatively little importance, and even appropriateness of content does not always play a significant role.
This does not imply that appropriateness is undesirable. It merely indicates that a one-to-one relationship between a symbol and what it symbolized is very often impossible to achieve and, under certain conditions, objectionable. Ultimately, the only mandate in the design of logos, it seems, is that they be distinctive, memorable, and clear.
3. Timeless
An effective logo should be timeless - that is, it will stand the test of time. Will the logo still be effective in 10, 20, 50 years?
Leave trends to the fashion industry - Trends come and go, and when you’re talking about changing a pair of jeans, or buying a new dress, that’s fine, but where your brand identity is concerned, longevity is key. Don’t follow the pack. Stand out.
Probably the best example of a timeless logo is the Coca-Cola logo… if you compare it to the Pepsi logo below, you can see just how effective creating a timeless logo can be. Notice how the Coca Cola logo has barely changed since 1885? That is timeless design.

4. Versatile
An effective logo should be able to work across a variety of mediums and applications. For this reason a logo should be designed in vector format, to ensure that it can be scaled to any size. The logo should be able to work both in horizontal and vertical formats.
Ask yourself; is a logo still effective if:
- Printed in one colour?
- Printed on the something the size of a postage stamp?
- Printed on something as large as a billboard?
- Printed in reverse (ie. light logo on dark background)
One way around creating a versatile logo is to begin designing in black and white only. This allows one to focus on the concept and shape, rather than the subjective nature of colour. One must also remember printing costs - the more colors used, the more expensive it will be for the business over the long term.
I like to work first in black and white to ensure that the logo will look good in its simplest form. Color is very subjective and emotional. This can distract from the overall design - say if you saw your logo in all red, that color may be the first thing that you respond to and not the composition of the design elements. I will not even consider submitting color suggestions to a client for review until they have signed off on a final black and white logo.
One should also familiarise themself with the commercial printing process so as not to come into printing problems further down the track. Learn to know the difference between the CMYK, Pantone and RGB color systems. When designing logos, the Pantone colour system is recommended.
5. Appropriate
How you position the logo should be appropriate for its intended purpose. For example, if you are designing a logo for children’s toys store, it would be appropriate to use a childish font & colour scheme. This would not be so appropriate for a law firm.
It is also important to state that that a logo doesn’t need to show what a business sells or offers as a service. ie. Car logos don’t need to show cars, computer logos don’t need to show computers. The Harley Davidson logo isn’t a motorcycle, nor is the Nokia logo a mobile phone. A logo is purely for identification.

Should a logo be self-explanatory? It is only by association with a product, a service, a business, or a corporation that a logo takes on any real meaning. A logo derives its meaning and usefulness from the quality of that which it symbolizes. If a company is second rate, the logo will eventually be perceived as second rate. It is foolhardy to believe that a logo will do its job immediately, before an audience has been properly conditioned.

Facebook : FarmVille Past 60 Million Users Monthly!
It’s a good month for Zynga. The company has one game which continues to thrive as the largest Facebook application ever and has a second application, Café World, which has raced up the charts in just a couple weeks. Playfish, now the second largest developer, also has had a great month with close to 20 percent growth, however it hasn’t been able to match Zynga who is simply dominating the Facebook platform.
As I wrote last week, while covering the explosive growth of care world , the Facebook platform has essentially become a large gaming platform. While there are other community applications which continue to thrive, there is no comparison between games and the other applications. Facebook gaming has ballooned into a massive industry with virtual goods driving much of the revenue growth.
FarmVille has become an icon on the platform as no other application has come close to matching its massive user base. It has almost doubled the second largest application, Causes, in terms of monthly active users and has tripled the Facebook iPhone application in terms of daily active users. The second most popular, non-Facebook developed, application based on daily active users happens to be Café World which has just under 7 million daily active users.
The results have been nothing short of astonishing. If Zynga keeps at this pace, the company could soon come close to matching Facebook’s own revenue, at least until Facebook releases their payment platform and opens the gift shop to developers. Playfish has also proven to be a stellar company which not only creates top tier games but also has a great revenue model.
At the Social Ad Summit in New York City two weeks ago, Sebastien De Halleux, COO and Co-Founder of Playfish, emphasized the company’s focus on maintaining an amazing user experience. This means that rather than placing distracting banner advertisements, they have focused on production-heavy advertising. Comparable to television advertisement production costs, many advertisers have yet to venture into this area, leaving virtual goods sales to pick up the slack.
While the advertising revenue may not be at the levels Zynga, Playfish, and other companies would like, virtual goods are doing a great job of filling the void. As I wrote last week, virtual good sales are expected to surpass $1 billion in the U.S. alone this year. Much of those transactions will be taking place on the Facebook platform. Not surprisingly, Zynga will account for the vast majority of those transactions.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next 6 to 12 months as the growth in this space continues to be phenomenal.
Privacy Settings Every Facebook User Should Know.
Everyday I receive an email from somebody about how their account was hacked, how a friend tagged them in the photo and they want a way to avoid it, as well as a number of other complications related to their privacy on Facebook. Over the weekend one individual contacted me to let me know that he would be removing me as a friend from Facebook because he was “going to make a shift with my Facebook use - going to just mostly family stuff.”
Perhaps he was tired of receiving my status updates or perhaps he didn’t want me to view photos from his personal life. Whatever the reason for ending our Facebook friendship, I figured that many people would benefit from a thorough overview on how to protect your privacy on Facebook. Below is a step by step process for protecting your privacy.
1. Use Your Friend Lists
I can’t tell you how many people are not aware of their friend lists. For those not aware of what friend lists are, Facebook describes them as a feature which allows “you to create private groupings of friends based on your personal preferences. For example, you can create a Friend List for your friends that meet for weekly book club meetings. You can create Friend Lists for all of your organizational needs, allowing you to quickly view friends by type and send messages to your lists.”
There are a few very important things to remember about friend lists:
- You can add each friend to more than one friend group
- Friend groups should be used like “tags” as used elsewhere around the web
- Friend Lists can have specific privacy policies applied to them
I’ll touch on each of the things listed above in more detail later. A typical setup for groups would be “Friends”, “Family”, and “Professional”. These three groups can then be used to apply different privacy policies. For example, you may want your friends to see photos from the party you were at last night, but you don’t want your family or professional contacts to see those photos.
Using friend lists is also extremely useful for organizing your friends if you have a lot of them. For instance I have about 20 friend lists and I categorize people by city (New York, San Francisco, D.C., Tel Aviv, etc), where I met them (conferences, past co-workers, through this blog), and my relationship with them (professional, family, social, etc).
You can configure your friend lists by visiting the friends area of your Facebook.
2. Remove Yourself From Facebook Search Results
My mom is a teacher and one of the first things she asked me when she joined Facebook is how she could make sure her students couldn’t see that she was on the site. Understandably my mom doesn’t want her middle school students to know what she’s up to in her personal life. There are numerous reasons that individuals don’t want their information to show up in search results on Facebook, and it’s simple to turn off your public visibility.
How to Remove Yourself From Facebook Search Results
Now that you’ve decided that you would like to remove yourself from Facebook’s search results, here’s how to do it:
- Visit your search privacy settings page
- Under “Search Visibility” select “Only Friends” (Remember, doing so will remove you from Facebook search results, so make sure you want to be removed totally. Otherwise, you can select another group, such as “My Networks and Friends” which I believe is the default.)
- Click “Save Changes”
By default, Facebook makes your presence visible to the network you are in. Frequently, people aren’t aware of their visibility, so this is one of the first settings that users wish to modify. By selecting “Customize” from the search visibility drop down you can make your settings even more granular.
3. Remove Yourself From Google
Facebook gets A TON of traffic from displaying user profiles in search engines. Not all of your profile is displayed though. Currently the information displayed in the search profile is limited to: your profile picture, a list of your friends, a link to add you as a friend, a link to send you a message, and a list of up to approximately 20 fan pages that you are a member of.
For some people, being displayed in the search engines is a great way to let people get in contact with you, especially if you don’t have an existing website. Facebook also tends to rank high in the search results, so if you want to be easy to find, making your search profile can be a great idea. Many people don’t want any of their information to be public though.
By visiting the same search privacy settings page listed in the previous step, you can control the visibility of your public search listing which is visible to Google and other search engines. You can turn off your public search listing by simply unchecking the box next to the phrase “Create a public search listing for me and submit it for search engine indexing” as pictured in the image below.
4. Avoid the Infamous Photo/Video Tag Mistake
This is the classic Facebook problem. You let loose for a few hours one night (or day) and photos (or videos) of the moment are suddenly posted for all to view, not just your close friends who shared the moment with you. The result can be devastating. Some have been fired from work after incriminating photos/videos were posted for the boss to see. For others, randomly tagged photos/videos have ended relationships.
At the least, a tagged photo/video can result in personal embarrassment. So how do you prevent the infamous tagged photo or video from showing up in all of your friends news feeds? It’s pretty simple. First visit your profile privacy page and modify the setting next to “Photos Tagged of You”. Select the option which says “Customize…” and a box like the one pictured below will pop up.
Select the option “Only Me” and then “None of My Networks” if you would like to keep all tagged photos private. If you’d like to make tagged photos visible to certain users you can choose to add them in the box under the “Some Friends” option. In the box that displays after you select “Some Friends” you can type either individual friends or friend lists.
5. Protect Your Albums
Just because you’ve uploaded photos doesn’t mean that you’ve accurately tagged every photo correctly. This setting is more of a reminder than anything else. Frequently people will turn of their tagged photo visibility to certain friend lists yet keep their photo albums public to the world. If you are trying to make all your photos invisible you must do so on an album by album basis.
There is a specific Photos Privacy page from which you can manually configure the visibility of each album (as pictured below). This is an extremely useful configuration option and I highly recommend that you take advantage of it. This way you can store your photos indefinitely on Facebook yet ensure that the only people that can view your photos are the ones who you really want to see them.
6. Prevent Stories From Showing Up in Your Friends’ News Feeds
Oh, did you really just break up with your girlfriend? I’m sorry to hear that. I’m sure all of your friends and business contacts are also sorry to hear that. I can’t tell you how many awkward relationship status changes I’ve seen. The most regular one I’ve seen recently is when an attractive female ends their relationship and numerous guys hop on the opportunity to console her.
I’ve also seen the end of marriages, as well as weekly relationship status changes as individuals try to determine where their relationship stands with their significant other. My personal policy is to not display a relationship status, but many like to make a public statement out of their relationship. For those individuals, it can be a smart move to hedge against future disasters.
There are a number of ways to control how your relationship status is displayed. The first thing that most people should do is uncheck the box next to “Remove Relationship Status” in the News Feed and Wall Privacy page. In the rare instance that a relationship does uncomfortably end, you can avoid making things more uncomfortable by avoiding a friend notification about it.
Second, your relationship status falls within your “Basic Information” section of your profile. You can control who can see your basic information next to the “Basic Information” setting on the Profile Privacy page. Keep in mind that other relevant profile information like your gender, birth date, networks, and other settings are visible within your basic information section.
Making your basic information completely invisible to friends probably isn’t a good idea, but removing the news feed stories about relationship changes most likely is.
7. Protect Against Published Application Stories
This one is a little more tricky to manage but I’ll explain the issue at hand. Frequently when you add an application, a news feed item is immediately published to your profile. One way to get instantly embarrassed is to visit the “Have Sex!” application (found here). This application has no purpose besides telling your friends that you are interested in having sex with them. Without taking any action, the application will post a news feed story to your profile which says the equivalent of “Nick just published to the world that he is having sex!”
This is surely something that none of your professional contacts if any of your contacts are interested in seeing (honestly I’m a bit confused about that application, but that’s a different story). That’s why it’s important to monitor what takes place after you install an application on Facebook. Once you install an application you should visit your profile to ensure that no embarrassing notification has been posted to your profile.
More often then not, nothing will be posted but there are many applications on the platform unfortunately that publish stories without you knowing it. There are two ways to avoid having this happen: don’t visit applications or scan your profile every time that you do. Ultimately you shouldn’t be concerned about applications that you’ve built a trusted relationship with but any new applications could potentially post embarrassing notifications.
8. Make Your Contact Information Private
I personally use Facebook for professional and personal use and it can frequently become overwhelming. That’s why I’ve taken the time to outline these ten privacy protection steps. One of the first things I did when I started approving friend requests from people that I hadn’t built a strong relationship with, was make my contact information visible only to close contacts.
The contact information is my personal email and phone number. It’s a simple thing to set but many people forget to do it. Frequently people we don’t know end up contacting us and we have no idea how they got our contact information. Your contact privacy can be edited right from your profile. If you have chosen to enter this information, you should see a “Contact Information” area under the “Info” tab in your profile.
If it displays, you simply click “Edit” and then a screen like the one pictured below will show up.
For each contact item that you have in your profile you should set custom privacy settings (as pictured below) so that contacts that you aren’t close to don’t have access to your phone number and/or email. It’s a small change but it can save you the hassle of being pestered by people you don’t know well. Also, protecting your privacy is generally a good practice to get in the habit of doing.
As a side note, this is a great area to take advantage of friend lists. By getting in the habit of grouping your friends, you can ensure that you are navigating Facebook safely through privacy settings that are attached to your friend lists.
9. Avoid Embarrassing Wall Posts
Just because you use Facebook for business doesn’t mean your friends do. That’s why once in a while a friend of yours will come post something embarrassing or not necessarily “work friendly” and it can end up having adverse effects. That’s why Facebook has provided you with the ability to customize your wall postings visibility. You can also control which friends can post on your wall. There are two places you can control these things.
Adjust Wall Posting Visibility
Within your profile page you can control who can view wall postings made by your friends. To do so, click on the “Settings” icon on the wall in your profile page. Next, find the box pictured in the image above and adjust the setting which says “Who can see posts made by friends?” I’d suggest using a strategy similar to the one outlined in the previous step regarding contact information.
Control Who Can Post to Your Wall
In addition to controlling who can view wall postings published by your friends, you also want to control which friends can post on your wall. Not everybody needs to do this, but occasionally you simply want to prevent some people from posting on your page. If you visit the Profile Privacy settings page, there is a section labeled “Wall Posts”.
From this area you can completely disable your friends’ ability to post on your wall. You can also select specific friend lists that can post on your wall. Personally, I don’t really care who can post on my wall but I can understand the need to control who can see those wall postings. If you want to limit who can post wall posts on your profile, this is where you can do it.
10. Keep Your Friendships Private
While it’s fun to show off that you have hundreds or thousands of friends on Facebook, some of your friends don’t want to live public lives. That’s why it’s often a good policy to turn off your friends’ visibility to others. I’ve had a number of individuals visit my profile and then selectively pick off friends that are relevant to them for marketing purposes, or other reasons.
Whatever the reason they are doing it, just know that they are … it’s part of what makes Facebook so addictive: the voyeuristic nature. Also, your friends are frequently visible to the public through search engines and exposing this information can ultimately present a security risk. To modify the visibility of your friends, visit the Profile Privacy page.
Navigate down to the setting which says “Friends” and then modify the setting to whatever is right for you.
Conclusion
These are just ten ways that you can protect your privacy on Facebook. While there are a few other small things to keep in mind, these ten settings are most important. Keep in mind that while you may have turned off the visibility of many profile sections, there is no way to prevent all photos or videos from being visible if friends of yours make the images visible.
The best way to prevent embarrassing items from showing up on Facebook in the future is to not make bad judgements in your personal life. We’re all human though and being completely paranoid about every choice you make is probably not the best way to live your life. Be aware of what privacy settings are available and be conscious of what your friends may be publishing about you.
While you may not want to configure all of the privacy settings outlined, simply knowing how to do so is a great step in the right direction. By following the 10 settings listed above you are well on your way to an embarrassment free future on Facebook!
